Italian Village Offers $1 Homes to Americans Seeking Escape from Trump’s Re-election

The village of Ollolai on the Italian island of Sardinia is offering Americans disillusioned by the recent US presidential election—where Donald Trump was re-elected—the chance to start anew by selling dilapidated homes for as little as one euro (approximately $1.05). The village, which has struggled with depopulation over the years, aims to attract new residents to revitalize its community.

Ollolai’s mayor, Francesco Columbu, shared with CNN that a new website has been launched to specifically target American expats. The website advertises a variety of housing options, from homes in need of renovation for just one euro, to ready-to-move-in properties priced up to $105,000.

The website’s message appeals to potential buyers with the following invitation: "Are you tired of global politics? Seeking a more balanced lifestyle and new opportunities? Begin your European escape in Sardinia’s beautiful paradise."

Mayor Columbu emphasized that the village is prioritizing American applicants, offering a fast-track process to help them settle in. The mayor sees US citizens as essential to reversing the village’s declining population. Ollolai, once home to 2,250 residents a century ago, now has just 1,150 inhabitants, and with only a few births each year, the town is desperate for a boost.

Ollolai’s offer includes three types of housing options: free temporary accommodations for certain digital nomads, one-euro homes in need of renovation, and move-in-ready homes up to €100,000 ($105,000). The village has set up a team to assist potential buyers with property tours, contractor recommendations, and paperwork.

Though the offer has generated interest, especially from the United States, the focus on Americans has raised some eyebrows. While Mayor Columbu did not explicitly mention Trump, he acknowledged that many Americans are seeking to leave the country following his re-election. The website has already received more than 38,000 inquiries, most of them from the US.
