Tanzania closes Nduta camp housing thousands of Burundi refugees Tanzania has closed a camp housing thousands of Burundian refugees and repatriated all but a handful, activists and the United Nations said. Burundian refugees have complained in recent months of being forcibly evicted from the Nduta camp in northwestern Tanzania, following a deal between the governments in Dar Es Salaam and Bujumbura to repatriate around 100,000 of them by June. As of late 2025, there were an estimated 142,000 Burundian refugees housed in two Tanzanian camps - Nduta and Nyarugusu, according to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR). "The approximately 3,000 refugees who remained in the (Nduta) camp were forcibly loaded onto vehicles to be sent back to Burundi on Thursday," the Coalition for Human Rights/Living in Refugee Camps (CDH/VICAR) said, AFP reported.  Borno: Zulum Unveils North’s First Rail Network Project

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has launched the construction of the region's first intra-city rail network, designed to connect Maiduguri with surrounding areas. This initiative marks a significant milestone as the first rail project of its kind in any of Nigeria's 19 northern states.

The project’s first phase will feature 12 terminals across Maiduguri, linking key locations such as markets, schools, public spaces, and economically vital areas. The rail network aims to enhance the movement of both passengers and goods, stimulate economic activity, and expand the state’s economic corridors.

During a site visit with the implementation partner, Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC), Borno's Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Aliyu Mohammed Bamanga, highlighted that feasibility studies, environmental assessments, and community consultations are underway to ensure the project’s success.

Once completed, the rail network will transform transportation in Maiduguri, offering an affordable, energy-efficient, and eco-friendly alternative to other modes of transport. It will complement other ongoing infrastructure projects, including the 113-kilometre expansion of Maiduguri's East, West, and South ring roads.

Additionally, Zulum's administration has introduced electric and gas-powered taxis and buses at subsidized rates to ease the impact of transportation and living costs in Maiduguri, following the removal of fuel subsidies.

This rail project is part of Governor Zulum's broader vision to restore peace, encourage economic growth, and rebuild infrastructure across Borno State, which has suffered significant damage due to over a decade of insurgency.
