Zambia president approves law expanding parliament months before election Zambia's President Hakainde Hichilema on Thursday signed into law constitutional changes that will expand the country's parliament, Reuters reported. The changes increase the number of members of parliament to around 280 from 167 currently by creating more constituencies, reserving 40 new seats for women, youth and people with disabilities, and allowing the president to appoint 11 members instead of eight previously. Hichilema, who will run for a second presidential term in the August 2026 election, said during a signing ceremony that the changes were being made in good faith and there was adequate consultation. He previously argued that some constituencies were too big for effective service delivery and should be split into smaller ones. Some opposition politicians have criticised the move to increase the number of members of parliament at a time when the country is still emerging from a protracted debt...

CUSTOMS AT CHENNAI AIRPORT ARRESTED AN AIR INDIA CABIN CREW MEMBER AND A PASSENGER FOR ATTEMPTING TO SMUGGLE GOLD INTO INDIA. (PHOTO).

Customs officials at Chennai Airport have arrested an Air India cabin crew member and a passenger for attempting to smuggle 1.7 kilograms of 24-carat gold into India.  The gold, valued at over ₹1 crore, was concealed in compound form within the crew member’s undergarments.

The arrests occurred after the flight from Dubai landed in Chennai on Sunday. Upon interception, the passenger admitted to handing over the gold to the cabin crew member during the flight, intending for it to be smuggled out of the airport.

This incident highlights a shift in smuggling tactics, with smugglers now attempting to use airline staff to bypass security measures. Authorities have noted an increase in such methods following crackdowns on ground staff involved in smuggling operations.

Both the cabin crew member and the passenger have been remanded in judicial custody. Air India has not yet commented on the incident. This case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by enforcement agencies in curbing gold smuggling activities, despite a narrowing price difference between gold markets in Dubai and India.
