Edo Election Tribunal to Begin Full Hearing on Ighodalo vs. Okpebholo Case Wednesday

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has scheduled Wednesday, January 15, 2025, for the full hearing of the petition filed by Dr. Asue Ighodalo and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 21, 2024 election.

The adjournment followed a request by the lead counsel for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Governor Okpebholo, citing a prior commitment at the Supreme Court.

The petitioners, Ighodalo and the PDP, are challenging INEC's declaration of Okpebholo as the election winner, which showed Okpebholo receiving 291,667 votes compared to Ighodalo’s 247,274.

During the resumed session on Monday, January 13, in Benin City, the tribunal’s Assistant Secretary, Dayo Dahunsi, conveyed the respondents’ request for an adjournment. While the petitioners’ counsel, Oladipo Oshinowo, expressed readiness to proceed, he conceded to the adjournment, emphasizing an understanding that no further delays would occur.

Justice Wilfred Kpochi, leading the tribunal, granted the adjournment with the agreement of all parties, including the APC’s counsel, Josephine Ogagaworia.

The tribunal will now proceed with the substantive hearing on Wednesday, aiming to address the PDP’s challenge to Okpebholo’s victory.
