Four Suspects Arrested Following Discovery of Illegal Gold Processing Laboratory in Mopani District Appeared in Court

Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the discovery of an illegal gold processing laboratory along the R71 near Tarentaalrand in the Letsitele policing area of the Mopani District on Saturday, 8 February 2025.

The suspects made their brief appearance before the Ritavi Magistrate's Court on Monday, 10 February 2025, facing charges related to the illegal processing of gold-bearing materials. They were remanded in custody and will appear again on 18 February 2025 for formal bail proceedings.

The accused have been identified as Jonh Vondo (39, Zimbabwean), Hardlife Manjoko (35, Zimbabwean), Biggie Chimwero (36, Zimbabwean), and Samuel Almeida Mashaba (46, Mozambican). Mashaba faces an additional charge of contravening the Immigration Act.

The arrests followed a highly coordinated, intelligence-driven operation conducted by the Mopani District Vala Umgodi Task Team, with support from the Tactical Joint Operational Center (TACJOC) Detectives and Airwing Drone Pilots. Two of the arrested suspects are believed to be the primary figures behind the illegal mining activities in the area.

During the operation, authorities seized several items linked to the illegal gold processing activities. These included containers with carbon ashes, suspected to contain precious minerals, as well as gas bottles, sulfuric acids, and oxygen cylinders. In addition, two vehicles — a red Haval and a white Mercedes-Benz, both registered in Gauteng — were confiscated. These vehicles are believed to belong to the two primary suspects involved in the operation.

The investigation continues as authorities work to uncover more details about the illegal mining operation and its network.
