Residents of Awon Ward in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State have commended Governor Uba Sani and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, for approving the establishment of a military Forward Operations Base (FOB) in the Barga community.
They described the development as a major step toward restoring peace and stability in an area long plagued by armed banditry and other security challenges.
During a media tour of the project site in Barga, a community leader, Mr. Zanko Adamu, told Salama News that persistent attacks by bandits had forced many residents to abandon their homes and farmlands in search of safety.
He said the establishment of the military base would go a long way in curbing the activities of criminal elements who have been using the area as a route to the Rijana forest—reportedly one of their major hideouts.
Earlier, the councillor representing Awon Ward at the Kachia Legislative Council, Mr. Mark Bawa, thanked the Executive Chairman of the local government, Dr. Manzo Maigari, for taking the people’s concerns seriously and presenting their request to the state government.
He noted that the prompt response from the governor, in collaboration with the Chief of Defence Staff, has rekindled hope among residents who have endured years of insecurity.
Mr. Bawa added that the once-thriving farming community has been impoverished by frequent attacks, leading to reduced agricultural output and food shortages.
Also speaking, a resident, Mrs. Hannatu Dikko, highlighted the socio-economic impact of insecurity in the area. She explained that many businesses have shut down, and schools remain closed, leaving children without access to education.
Salama News reports that Awon Ward is one of the communities hardest hit by banditry in Kachia Local Government, with many lives lost, cattle rustled, and residents displaced from their homes.
The Forward Operations Base, once completed and fully operational, is expected to serve as a strategic point for swift military response and surveillance—ultimately enhancing security and facilitating the return of displaced persons to their ancestral homes.
