This feature will allow mobile users to see the caller’s registered name on their screen without needing third-party apps like Truecaller. The move is aimed at reducing spam and fraudulent calls by ensuring caller identity verification.
To make CNAP a reality, major telecom companies such as Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel, and Reliance Jio are working with global tech firms like HP, Dell, Ericsson, and Nokia. The necessary equipment for trials has already been ordered, and initial tests have been conducted in select regions. The service will be introduced in phases once the technology is fully stabilized.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had directed telecom operators in January 2025 to roll out CNAP as soon as possible. This decision follows TRAI’s earlier recommendation in February 2024, urging the government to mandate the feature for all smartphones. Authorities believe CNAP will help curb customer harassment caused by frequent spam and scam calls.
While the official rollout date has not been announced, TRAI has urged the government to expedite the process. Once implemented, CNAP will ensure that every call displays the caller’s registered name, allowing users to make informed decisions about answering calls and enhancing overall security in mobile communications.
