FCT Minister Wike Warns Contractors, Dismisses Opposition Coalition Amid Road Commissioning

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, issued a stern warning to contractors on Wednesday, cautioning against causing him trouble by failing to meet project deadlines. Speaking during the commissioning of the Arterial Road N16 (Shehu Shagari Way) from Ring Road 1 (Nnamdi Azikiwe Way) to Arterial Road N20 (Wole Soyinka Way) and other roads in the Katampe district by President Bola Tinubu, Wike urged contractors to honor their commitments.

“This job was awarded by the Federal Council in September, and we flagged it off in October. I told the contractor, I don’t want to hear abandonment,” Wike stated. He emphasized that payments made during the rainy or dry seasons must result in corresponding work progress, adding, “If I pay you during the rainy season, you must work during the rainy season. Return the money if you can’t, and we’ll pay you after the rain.”

Wike expressed initial skepticism about the CGC contractor but gained confidence after their successful completion of the interchange from the Presidential Villa to Asokoro, a project not awarded under the current administration. “I told them, are you sure Mr. President will commission this project during his second year in office? They said yes,” he recounted, reinforcing his demand for timely delivery.

The minister also took a swipe at the opposition coalition, led by figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, ex-Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, which aims to unseat Tinubu in 2027. Wike asserted that Tinubu’s good works have dismantled the coalition’s prospects. “Your good work has killed the coalition. They have no choice but to watch Mr. President on national television for 17 days,” he said, adding that Abuja residents are pleased and hope the opposition’s frustration persists.

President Tinubu commissioned the projects, marking a significant infrastructure milestone in the FCT.
