FCT Minister Wike Announces End of Rivers State Emergency on September 18

Nyesom Wike, former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, announced that the state of emergency in Rivers will be lifted on September 18, 2025. Wike made the statement on Saturday, August 30, 2025, after casting his vote during the ongoing local government elections across the state.

Speaking to journalists at his polling booth, Wike explained that the emergency measures, implemented earlier this year to stabilize the state, would be lifted following a comprehensive review of the security situation. He described the development as a positive step toward restoring normalcy in Rivers State.

Wike highlighted that the current elections mark the first legitimate grassroots polls in years, referencing a Supreme Court ruling that declared the previous local government election under Governor Siminalayi Fubara illegal. “What we are doing now is a proper democratic exercise, and that is why you can see the enthusiasm, particularly in the rural areas,” he said.

Commenting on voter turnout, Wike noted strong participation in rural communities but lower engagement in commercial centers, attributing this to traders prioritizing economic activities over voting. He emphasized that the electoral process reflects the will of the people and demonstrates Rivers State’s commitment to deepening democracy.

The presidency has yet to comment on Wike’s announcement regarding the lifting of the state of emergency on September 18.
