No good deed goes unpunished.  A Florida sea tow captain saved a man from a burning ship only to be shoved overboard and have his boat stolen. This shocking incident occurred near Marco Island on March 6th. On that date, a call went out regarding a burning boat. The captain of a sea tow boat heard the distress call and rushed to provide aid. He was able to quickly locate the burning boat and  discovered 40-year-old, Ryan Deiter, and his dog onboard the burning ship. Wasting no time, the captain of the sea tow boat was able to maneuver alongside the distressed boat and begin efforts to extricate Deiter and his dog from the doomed vessel.  Eventually, the sea tow captain was able to pull both Deiter and his dog onboard the tow boat. However, once Deiter was pulled to safety, he repaid a stranger's kindness with treachery.  Deiter shoved the captain from his own boat and fled the scene in the stolen boat, leaving the man who had just risked his own vessel and life...

Nigeria Correctional Service Vows Sanctions for Negligent Officers Amid Surge in Jailbreaks

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has issued a stern warning to its officers, threatening sanctions for negligence following a wave of jailbreaks that have compromised custodial centres nationwide. Controller-General Sylvester Nwakuche attributed the security breaches to the “lackadaisical attitude” of some personnel, declaring that such lapses will no longer be tolerated.

According to data from media reports, the NCoS website, and other sources, approximately 6,700 inmates have escaped from 13 correctional facilities between 2019 and 2025. Over 4,600 of these escapees, many of whom were awaiting trial for serious crimes such as terrorism and armed robbery, remain at large. Around 2,000 have been recaptured, the NCoS reported.

Speaking at a ceremony in Abuja on Friday, where 30 officers were promoted to Assistant Controllers-General of Corrections, Nwakuche condemned the negligence of some zonal coordinators, state controllers, and custodial centre officers. “It is obvious that our Zonal Coordinators, State Controllers, and Officers-in-Charge of Custodial Centres have abdicated their duties. This is unacceptable, and any further abdication of responsibilities will surely attract the big stick,” he stated.

Nwakuche emphasized that the promotions were a call to action for disciplined and proactive leadership, especially as public confidence in the correctional system wanes. He reiterated the NCoS’s commitment to the NCoS Act 2019, which prioritizes rehabilitation and reintegration over punitive measures.

The Controller-General also commended President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for their support in reforming the service and improving conditions for both personnel and inmates. He described the officers’ promotions as recognition of their years of diligence, sacrifice, and commitment to duty, urging them to uphold the service’s mandate with renewed vigor.
