Pope Leo XIV is expected to make his first international trip to Lebanon before the end of the year.
Cardinal Bechara Boutros Rai, patriarch of the Maronite Catholic Church, said the visit would take place “sometime between now and December,” though the Vatican has yet to announce exact dates. Preparations are reportedly underway, but the timing remains uncertain pending Vatican confirmation.
Archbishop Paul Sayah, deputy to Lebanon’s highest-ranking Catholic leader, described the visit as significant. “Lebanon is a multicultural, multi-religious country and a place of dialogue,” he said. “It’s one of the rare environments where Muslims and Christians live together and respect each other, sending a meaningful message to the region.”
Popes have long traveled internationally to connect with Catholics worldwide. Pope Francis, for example, visited 68 countries on 47 foreign trips during his 12-year pontificate and had previously expressed a desire to visit Lebanon, though the nation’s political and economic crises made planning difficult. Lebanon, home to more than two million Catholics, holds symbolic importance for the Church.
