SIKKIM, A SMALL HIMALAYAN STATE IN NORTHEAST INDIA, HAS MADE HISTORY AS THE WORLD’S FIRST FULLY ORGANIC STATE. (PHOTO).

Sikkim, a small Himalayan state in Northeast India, has made history as the world’s first fully organic state.

Surrounded by Bhutan, Tibet, and Nepal, the state is known for its stunning landscapes and now for its sustainable lifestyle. Since 2016, every farm and field in Sikkim has been free from chemical fertilisers and pesticides, making it a role model for clean and green living.

The journey towards becoming fully organic began in 2003, when the government slowly phased out chemical farming and trained thousands of farmers in eco-friendly practices. By 2015, over 75,000 hectares of farmland had been converted to organic methods. This effort was recognised globally when Sikkim won the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation’s Future Policy Gold Award in 2018 for leading the way in sustainable farming.

For visitors, Sikkim offers a unique travel experience built around nature and community. From eco-homestays and organic farm visits in Yuksom to fresh produce markets in Ravangla, travellers can enjoy authentic local food and culture. Places like Dzongu, home to the Lepcha community, show how traditional life and environmental respect go hand in hand. The state has also introduced bamboo water bottles for tourists in Lachen to reduce plastic waste.

Sikkim’s organic success has not only improved the lives of its people but also attracted global attention as a model for the future of tourism and farming. With growing concerns about climate change and food safety, the state stands out as a destination that combines natural beauty with sustainable living. For travellers looking for clean food, fresh air, and meaningful experiences, Sikkim truly offers something special.
