The Abia State Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, convened a meeting with leaders of various transport unions in the state to address ongoing concerns regarding government revenue and ticketing policies. The meeting, held to foster dialogue and cooperation, follows recent tensions over revenue collection affecting transport unions across Abia State.
In his address, Dr. Ukaegbu commended the union leaders for their contributions to maintaining peaceful collaboration with the state government. He reassured them that the Ministry of Transport, under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, remains committed to protecting the interests and welfare of transport workers. “This administration will always prioritize your welfare and ensure a conducive environment for your operations,” Ukaegbu stated.
Professor Udochukwu Ogbonna, Chairman of the Board of Internal Revenue, also spoke at the meeting, emphasizing the Otti administration’s human-centered approach. He urged union members to comply with approved payment schedules, noting that these contributions are vital for the state’s development. “The government is committed to ensuring business thrives while safeguarding your rights,” Ogbonna said.
In response, Mr. Chukwuma Azode, Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, expressed gratitude for the commissioner’s dedication to improving their welfare. He pledged the unions’ continued collaboration with the state government to sanitize and enhance Abia’s transport sector in alignment with Governor Otti’s vision and directives.
The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including Dr. Obioma Nwaogbe, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport; Hon. Emmanuel Okpechi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Internally Generated Revenue; Comr. Boniface Oleka, State Director for Transport; and chairmen of various motor unions. The discussions mark a significant step toward resolving revenue-related issues and strengthening partnerships between the state government and transport unions.
