CENTCOM kills Al-Qaida-linked terrorist leader in Syria

The U.S. military has killed a senior member of an Al-Qaida-affiliated terrorist group in Syria, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Tuesday.

Muhammad Abd-al-Wahhab al-Ahmad was killed Thursday in a CENTCOM airstrike, though the exact location in Syria was not disclosed. CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper stated that U.S. forces in the Middle East remain ready to disrupt and defeat terrorist efforts and will continue defending the homeland, military personnel, allies, and partners in the region.

Al-Ahmad was identified as an "attack planner" with Ansar al-Islam, a group designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. in March 2004. Ansar al-Islam, which translates to "Supporters of Islam," is a militant Kurdish separatist movement that seeks to reshape Iraq as an Islamic state and was reportedly formed in 2001 with support from al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden.

The strike comes less than two months after CENTCOM forces killed a senior ISIS member and key financier during a northern Syria raid on Aug. 19. Earlier this year, in late February, CENTCOM conducted an airstrike that killed a senior military leader of the Al-Qaida-affiliated Hurras al-Din group in northwest Syria.
