Don’t Let My Husband Die in DSS Custody, Does his life not matter to you- Nnamdi Kanu’s Wife Begs Judge

According to a report by Vanguard news, Favour Michael Kanu, wife of detained IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has appealed to Justice James Omotosho of the Abuja High Court not to allow her husband die in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

In an open letter to the judge, she faulted a medical report submitted in court by a panel of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), which claimed Kanu was not in any life-threatening condition and could stand trial.

Mrs. Kanu dismissed the report as unethical and misleading, alleging that it was not genuinely conducted by the NMA but fabricated by the DSS.

She insisted that her husband remains critically ill and requires urgent medical attention outside the DSS facility, preferably in another hospital within Abuja.

She accused the DSS of inhumane treatment and torture, claiming her husband’s health had deteriorated since his extraordinary rendition from Kenya. She urged the court to prioritize his health, reminding the judge that he had earlier stated Kanu must be “alive and healthy” to face trial.

“The deteriorating health of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was caused primarily as a result of the torture and the inhumane treatment meted out on him when he was illegally brought back to Nigeria from Kenya. He was dumped in a dark, poorly ventilated cell in the DSS dungeon, with no access to treat his wounds or reach out to his loved ones"

Expressing disappointment with the delays and indecisiveness in court proceedings, Mrs. Kanu said what was once promised as an “accelerated hearing” has turned into prolonged stagnation.

“Why then will Your Lordship, deny Mazi Nnamdi Kanu the opportunity to be transferred to at least any manageable hospital in Abuja rather than subjecting him to that poorly-equipped DSS health centre, the same environment, and same people that kept him in that condition?

She pleaded with Justice Omotosho not to betray the confidence she reposed in his integrity, warning that continued neglect of Kanu’s worsening condition could amount to a death sentence in detention.
