Abia State Unveils Electric Bus Fleet, Promises Affordable, Eco-Friendly Transport

The Abia State Government has announced that the electric buses being introduced into its public transport system are designed to guarantee passenger safety, offer affordable fares, and achieve zero smoke emissions.

The Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, disclosed this on Saturday in Umuahia while speaking at the Abia–TĂĽrkiye Investment Summit and Product Exhibition.

Mr. Ukaegbu said the deployment of AI-driven traffic lights and the construction of modern bus terminals in Umuahia are part of broader efforts to restore order in the state’s urban centres and deliver more efficient services to residents.

He revealed that the state has already taken delivery of 20 electric buses and expects another 20 to arrive within the next few days, adding that the required bus terminals are now fully in, ready for operations.

The commissioner further disclosed that the ministry is prioritising accessibility for persons with disabilities, with some of the new electric buses specially designed to accommodate their needs.

He stated that bus terminals across the state will feature integrated ticketing systems, retail outlets, and enhanced security networks to ensure maximum convenience and safety for passengers.
