AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk.  Olympics British hockey great Imran Sherwani dies at 63

Imran Sherwani, the British field hockey star who scored twice in Britain’s 3-1 victory over West Germany in the 1988 Olympic final in Seoul, has died at the age of 63, his family announced Thursday. His second goal in that match, Britain’s third, drew the famous commentary from BBC’s Barry Davies: “Where were the Germans? But frankly, who cares!”

Sherwani was diagnosed with young-onset Alzheimer’s in December 2019, a condition he publicly shared two years later. During his career, he earned 49 international caps for England and represented Great Britain in 45 matches. He also won silver medals with England at the 1986 World Cup and the 1987 European Championship.

“Whilst many knew him for his sporting achievements, to us he was a devoted family man whose warmth, humour, and kindness touched everyone who knew him,” the Sherwani family said. “Imran will be profoundly missed, but his legacy will remain with us always.”

EuroHockey President Marcos Hofmann described him as “one of the very best,” noting that Sherwani’s performance in the Seoul final “will go down in history as one of those iconic moments which transcends our sport’s barriers and is part of the wider Olympic folklore.” England Hockey CEO Rich Beer added that Sherwani was “a remarkable person whose kindness and passion enriched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
