AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  Cross River Governor Launches “Xmas Free Transport Service” to Ease Festive Movement

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has launched a free bus service themed “Xmas Free Transport Service” to cushion the effects of economic hardship and support residents and visitors during the festive season. The initiative is designed to ease movement across the state as travel activities typically increase during Christmas.

Speaking at the flag off ceremony in Calabar, the Governor represented by his Deputy, Peter Odey said providing free transportation during festive periods has become a tradition for the administration. He noted that similar services were offered during Easter to reduce transportation costs and promote unity among citizens, in line with the government’s People First mantra and the Carnival Calabar theme, “Traces of Time.”

The free bus service will run throughout the duration of the Calabar Festival, covering major streets within Calabar Municipality. Among the identified routes are Watt Market to Scanobo, Watt Market to Atimbo, and other high traffic areas expected to witness increased movement during the celebrations.

To ensure wider coverage, the government has also included several inter local government routes. These will connect Calabar to major communities such as Ugep, Ikom, Abi, Obudu, and Ogoja. Additionally, a free ferry service will operate between Calabar and Creek Town in Odukpani, extending the benefit to riverine residents.

Odey encouraged both residents and visitors to take full advantage of the initiative, urging them to continue supporting and praying for the administration of Governor Otu and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He emphasized that the gesture reflects the government’s commitment to easing the burden on citizens during the festive season.
