AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. He urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, de-escalate tensions immediately, and comply fully with the permanent ceasefire and power-sharing arrangements under the agreement, T...

20 Residents Killed, Scores Abducted As Bandits Attack Communities In Kauru

No fewer than 20 residents have been killed and several others abducted following coordinated bandit attacks on multiple communities in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Sahara Reporters has reported.

One of the affected communities, Kadagen Kauru, was attacked on Monday night, during which a young woman identified as Fatima Zahra was abducted by the assailants.

The incident is part of a series of violent attacks that have continued to affect communities across the local government area.

Accounts from residents of the affected areas confirmed widespread killings and kidnappings.

In Ningi Karku, seven persons were abducted while one was killed. Kajunga recorded six abductions and two fatalities, while Kabari (Gobirawa) suffered the highest casualties, with 53 residents abducted and four killed. In Damakogi, three persons were kidnapped and one was killed.

Several other communities, including Fadan Rishiwa, Kagadama, Fagen Rawa, Rafin Iwa, Unguwan Baka, Nasarawan Kadage, Darmanu, Rumaya, Zaman Chawai, Kadagen Kauru, and Kizanya, also reported cases of abductions, deaths, and injuries.

Security analyst Bakatsine described the attacks as an escalating threat to residents of Kauru LGA, noting that the increasing frequency and apparent coordination of the assaults have left many communities fearful and exposed.

He stressed that urgent and decisive security measures are needed to prevent further loss of lives and mass abductions.

In recent weeks, several communities across the state have experienced similar attacks, with victims including women, children, and the elderly.

Earlier in January 2026, bandits reportedly killed two residents and abducted 32 others in villages within Sanga and neighboring local government areas. In some instances, the attackers were said to have returned shortly after initial raids to abduct more victims.

Separate incidents were also recorded in other parts of the state. In December 2025, two people were reportedly killed during an attack on Tudun Wadan Rido village in Chikun Local Government Area.

Previous reports also documented the abduction of religious leaders and their families, including a priest and his wife in the Nissi community, also in Chikun LGA.
