AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk.  Dolly Parton to skip 80th birthday celebration at Opry House

Dolly Parton, the Queen of Country, will not be attending her own 80th birthday celebration at the Grand Ole Opry, the singer announced on the Opry’s Instagram page Tuesday.

“Some of my favorite memories happened right here on stage at the Grand Ole Opry,” Parton said in the video. “I wish I could be there in person, but I’ll be sending you all my love for sure. So, you have the best night ever.” The event is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 17, two days before Parton’s actual birthday, and will feature birthday cupcakes, a giant fan-signed birthday card, Dolly-themed drinks, photo opportunities with a Dolly impersonator, and tributes during the Opry show. Country stars Lainey Wilson, Vince Gill, Rhonda Vincent, and Trannie Anderson will perform.

Parton did not specify why she won’t attend, though fans have followed her recent health updates. In October, she postponed her Las Vegas residency, citing health concerns and explaining she had been focusing on care for her late husband, Carl Dean, who passed in 2025 at age 82. At the time, she reassured fans in an Instagram video, saying, “Lately, everybody thinks that I am sicker than I am. Do I look sick? I wanted you to know that I’m not dying.” In November, she missed the Dollywood Hall of Fame induction, apologizing to fans and explaining her doctors advised her to “take it easy for just a little while.”
