AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  Florida hospital dismisses nurse for profane social media post about Leavitt’s pregnancy

A nurse at a South Florida hospital has been terminated after posting a video on social media making profane remarks about White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt’s pregnancy.

Baptist Health South Florida confirmed the dismissal in a statement Friday, saying the nurse’s comments “do not reflect our values or the standards we expect of healthcare professionals.” The health system added that, while personal opinions are respected, language or behavior that undermines trust or calls into question a caregiver’s ability to provide compassionate care has no place in healthcare.

The nurse, identified as Lexie Lawler, a labor and delivery nurse at Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital, reportedly shared a now-deleted TikTok in which she made a graphic remark about Leavitt’s pregnancy. Screen recordings circulated online showed Lawler wishing Leavitt an injury related to childbirth while using a profane insult. The video was highlighted by a conservative social media account, which criticized the nurse’s role in delivering babies.

Leavitt, 28, announced last month that she and her husband are expecting their second child. She is the youngest White House press secretary in history and the first known to be pregnant while serving in the position. In a statement on Instagram, she expressed excitement about growing her family and gratitude for the blessing of motherhood.
