 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano approaches 40th eruption as activity intensifies

 Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano is approaching its 40th eruption as recent activity signals that lava fountaining could begin anytime between Sunday and Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The volcano, one of the world’s most active, has been showing heightened activity since Dec. 23, 2024, when its current eruptive episode, Episode 39, began.

The USGS has set Kilauea at a Volcano Alert Level of "Watch" and an Aviation Color Code of "Orange," indicating increased volcanic unrest and the possibility of an eruption that could pose limited hazards. On Saturday, volcanic tremors intensified, and dome-shaped lava fountains reaching 50 feet continued at Halemaʻumaʻu, feeding lava flows from both the north and south vents. Overnight activity included intermittent overflows, with lava spreading 250 to 500 feet wide and extending more than half a mile into the crater. By late afternoon, the south vent drained temporarily while a new lava dome emerged, quickly resuming overflows. The ongoing activity suggests that Kilauea could enter its next eruptive phase at any moment.

 Tinubu announces arrival of 4 US attack helicopters President Bola Tinubu has stated that four attack helicopters will soon arrive in the country from the United States amid rising insecurity. Speaking at a meeting with a delegation of the Christian Association of Nigeria, led by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, at his Lagos residence, on Friday, Dec. 26, Tinubu revealed that the Federal Government had ordered four attack helicopters from the U.S, adding that they will arrive in the country “soon”.
