Hilton, Minnesota hotel apologizes after email cancels immigration agents’ rooms

A Minnesota hotel is apologizing after federal immigration agents were told they could not stay at the property, a decision the hotel and its corporate brand now say violated internal policy. The incident drew sharp criticism from the Department of Homeland Security, which accused the Hilton hotel chain of deliberately refusing service to its personnel in what it described as a coordinated effort to interfere with immigration enforcement. The controversy centers on the Hampton Inn Lakeville, located roughly 20 miles south of Minneapolis, where agents attempting to secure lodging were informed that their reservations had been canceled.

According to DHS, the agents had booked rooms using official government email addresses and standard government rates when they received a message sent from a Hilton-associated email account stating that immigration agents would not be permitted to stay at the hotel. Screenshots of the email were shared publicly, prompting DHS to accuse Hilton of intentionally obstructing law enforcement operations related to immigration. The message said the reservations had been canceled and made clear that agents engaged in immigration enforcement would not be accommodated at the property.

Both Hilton and the local hotel operators moved quickly to distance themselves from the decision. Hilton said the Lakeville Hampton Inn is independently owned and operated under a franchise agreement and emphasized that the actions taken by the hotel staff were not consistent with company policies. The company said it had contacted the property directly and received an apology, noting that the refusal did not reflect Hilton’s standards or approach to guests.

Everpeak Hospitality, the company that operates the Lakeville hotel, also issued an apology and acknowledged the mistake. The operator said the cancellation ran counter to its policy of welcoming all guests and confirmed that it does not discriminate against any individuals or government agencies. Everpeak said it has reached out to the affected agents to ensure they are accommodated and apologized for the disruption caused by the incident.
