AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk.  Ndiowu Community in Orumba North, Appeals for Postponement of Igwe Election.

The Ndiowu Community in Orumba North Local Government Area has called on Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, to postpone its traditional ruler (Igwe) election scheduled for Monday, January 12, 2026, and reschedule it for Easter or December 2026 to ensure wider participation.

Speaking at a press briefing in Ndiowu Town Hall, the immediate past President General, Engineer Chike Emenike, said many indigenes, especially those in the diaspora, would be disenfranchised if the election holds as scheduled. He also faulted the directive by the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Town Union Affairs, Mr Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, that the town’s constitution would not be used, insisting that only a court can halt the use of a community constitution.

Other leaders, including the Woman Leader, Mrs Ifeyinwa Nwafor, the Youth Leader, Mr Onyeka Okeke, and a village representatives’ leader, Mazi Obiorah Okoli, warned that holding the election as planned could lead to unrest.

They also condemned the alleged exclusion of women and the proposed use of secret ballot instead of the Option A4 method provided in the community’s constitution.
