At least six FBI agents involved in the 2022 investigation of President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida were fired on Wednesday, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The terminations came after FBI Director Kash Patel disclosed that phone records belonging to him and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles had been subpoenaed. Patel and Wiles were private citizens at the time the records were collected during special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into Trump’s handling of classified documents.
The FBI did not comment on the firings. The FBI Agents Association criticized the move as unlawful, saying it violates the due process rights of agents who serve in high-risk roles. “These actions weaken the Bureau by removing critical expertise and destabilizing the workforce, undermining trust in leadership and jeopardizing the Bureau’s ability to meet recruitment goals — ultimately putting the nation at greater risk,” the organization said in a statement.
