Hoda Kotb returns to TODAY during Guthrie investigation

Co-host Hoda Kotb joined “TODAY” on Friday to speak about the widespread support the Guthrie family has received amid the ongoing search for their mother and to share her personal heartbreak over her friend’s disappearance.

“This whole situation is breaking my heart, and I’m grateful to be here with you,” Kotb told her colleagues. “Everyone is hoping and praying for Nancy’s safe return. From vigils to positive messages online, there has been an incredible outpouring of support and hope.”

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was reported missing Sunday afternoon from her home near Tucson, Arizona, after she failed to attend church, according to Pima County authorities. She was last seen the night before, around 9:45 p.m., when family members dropped her off at home. The search has drawn attention and support from across the country, including the NBC community and public figures in Hollywood.

Kotb noted the national response, saying, “The nation is rallying around our dear friend, Savannah, and her family, believing their beloved mom, Nancy, will be back soon in their loving arms.”

Authorities, including the FBI, are investigating the possible abduction, but no suspects or persons of interest have been identified. Reports have circulated about ransom notes sent to news outlets, with at least one claiming a Thursday deadline. In a video near the alleged deadline, Camron Guthrie asked to speak with “whoever is out there holding our mother,” saying the family is ready and waiting to communicate. Law enforcement has not confirmed these reports, and NBC News has not seen the notes.

Kotb praised Savannah Guthrie, saying she has always been the first to help colleagues in need, and expressed the helplessness felt by friends unable to do more. “We’re all so close with her, and we all want to help her,” Kotb said. “We’ll be patient and keep her in our prayers, because that’s all we can do right now.”
