 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali.  GOV. KEFAS RELEASES ₦200 M, COMMITS MONTHLY ₦100 M TO END TARABA VARSITY ASUU STRIKE 


Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has approved the immediate release of ₦200 million to address the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Taraba State University (TSU). The governor also pledged an additional ₦100 million monthly until all outstanding salaries are fully paid.


The announcement came during a visit to the university on Thursday, March 12, 2026, where Governor Kefas, who is the Visitor to the institution, signed the payment approval documents in the presence of TSU ASUU Chairman, Mbave Joshua Garba, and other union officials.


Speaking on the occasion, Governor Kefas said, “Education remains a top priority for this administration. We cannot allow the future of our young people to be held back.” He added that pension arrears have been addressed, and promotion arrears approved and settled, signaling a commitment to improving staff welfare.


Chairman Garba welcomed the intervention, expressing optimism that the financial commitment would pave the way for a swift end to the strike. “We are hopeful that this action will restore normalcy and ensure our members receive what is due,” he said.

Analysts say the governor’s decisive step is likely to boost confidence in the state’s educational system and could serve as a benchmark for resolving similar disputes in other state-run institutions.


The move marks a significant effort by the Taraba government to ensure academic activities resume without further disruption, emphasizing the administration’s resolve to prioritize education.
