LASG REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO END TUBERCULOSIS IN COMMUNITIES IN LAGOS STATE

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday reaffirmed its commitment to completely eradicate Tuberculosis (TB) at the grassroots level across the metropolis.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health District III, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke made this known during a courtesy visit by the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria team to her Ikoyi office, emphasising the present administration's commitment to continually prioritise health security across the state.

She said the Lagos State First Lady, Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Sanwo-Olu, is a Tuberculosis (TB) champion with the mandate of ending TB now and the continuous expansion of TB scale-up diagnostic centres.

According to her, “The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Sanwo-Olu is a TB champion. We, the team at the Lagos State Health District III, are satisfying Madam First Lady in achieving our TB mandate. Every day, when we turn on our TV we see various advertisements on how to end TB in the State”.

She said the Lagos State Health District III team carries out community-based outreach activities weekly, visiting different places. She added that the team would continue to optimise TB screening as it is at no cost and also continue to make all health packages more robust.

The PS explained that the District is special as it possesses certain qualities that others do not have, stressing that the district has X-Ray viewing box in all the comprehensive facilities.

She added that there are 67 PHCs across the district and nine of these PHCs are comprehensive, adding that there are Medical Doctors in 21 of the PHCs, which makes it easy to interpret the X-Rays

Mrs. Adeleke promised the visiting team that the District would support them in achieving TB screening, TB optimisation, TB integration and ad hoc staff integration at all PHC facilities across the District.

She said supporting the team on the aforementioned won't be at any cost because the District III team always follow up on cases of immunisation amongst others.

Earlier, the Head of the delegation / State Team Lead from the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria, Dr. Adetokunbo Okungbure expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government for continually coming up with innovations to eliminate TB across the state.

She said the team is seeking help from the government on the issues of TB screening, TB optimisation and primary health care seminars and integration, stressing that patients who come to PHCs coughing should be screened for TB.

"We don't want a situation whereby a patient will come to the facility with TB and just say that I'm coughing. And the clinician will only administer cough syrup and the patient goes home and continues coughing while also spreading the disease", she said.

The high point of the meeting was the honouring of the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health District III, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke with an award in recognition of her service by the Institute.
