Fans of Taylor Swift now have a formal word to describe their devotion: “Swiftie” has officially been added to the dictionary.
The term is defined as “a fan of the music of Taylor Swift,” with the plural “Swifties” referring to the fandom as a whole. Although it is now formally recognized, the nickname has been used by fans for over a decade. Since the release of Swift’s self-titled debut album in 2006, she has cultivated a massive global following. Over 20 years, her fans have embraced the name “Swifties” to show solidarity, and Swift herself trademarked the term in 2017, using it across merchandise and promotional campaigns.
Language experts note that dictionary updates reflect common usage, not dictate it, and “Swiftie” joins other fandom-related words in the latest update, including “Beyhive,” for Beyoncé fans, and “Trekkie,” for fans of “Star Trek.”
Taylor Swift, now a billionaire musician with 16 albums, has built one of the most dedicated fanbases in the world. Her Eras tour, which concluded in 2024, generated over $2 billion from nearly 150 shows worldwide, and the Los Angeles concert film became the highest-grossing concert movie ever. Swifties are known for decoding hidden messages in her songs, social media posts, and promotional material, tracking everything from song meanings to potential album release dates.
