 Abia JUSUN Accuses State Government of Plot to Undermine Judicial Autonomy


Members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Abia State chapter, have alleged that the Abia State Government is attempting to bring the judiciary under the control of the executive arm, insisting that their ongoing strike is aimed at protecting the independence of the judiciary.


The union also accused the Accountant General of Abia State, Njum Onyemenam, of allegedly withholding funds approved by Governor Alex Otti for the court session of former Chief Judge, Justice Kalu Amah.


Abia State Chairman of JUSUN, Comrade Chinedu Ezeh, made the allegations on Monday at the Umuahia High Court complex while responding to the state government’s challenge asking the union to provide details of its consolidated salary payment table.


Ezeh stated that the Abia State Government has failed to fully implement the contents of the agreement it signed with JUSUN on June 14, 2023.


He advised the executive arm to allow the judiciary to enjoy full autonomy as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.


“The ongoing strike by our members was duly approved by the national headquarters of JUSUN and was properly communicated to the Abia State Government before it commenced,” Ezeh said.


The JUSUN chairman dismissed claims that judiciary workers are already receiving leave allowance under the consolidated salary scheme. He revealed that a Level 5 Step 1 worker in the judiciary earns N86,000 monthly before tax, while their counterparts in other arms of the civil service on the same grade level receive N91,000 before tax.


Ezeh said the union is not opposed to staff verification but insisted that such an exercise should be conducted by the judiciary itself as an independent arm of government, and not by a consultant hired by the state government.


He lamented that the state government is deliberately withholding the March 2026 salaries of judiciary staff, describing it as a deliberate attempt to subject workers to hunger and force them to suspend the strike.


“They already have our salary table and therefore should not be asking us to provide the salary table,” Ezeh added.


The JUSUN chairman also denied the state government’s claim that the strike is hindering the verification of retired judiciary workers, arguing that the files of the retirees are already in the government’s possession.
