An American YouTuber who drew widespread outrage in South Korea for a series of provocative and disruptive stunts has been sentenced to six months in prison. A court in Seoul found Ramsey Khalid Ismael, known online as Johnny Somali, guilty of multiple offenses, including obstruction of business and distributing fabricated sexually explicit material. Prosecutors had pushed for a longer, three-year sentence, citing a pattern of behavior that included harassment at public venues, disruptive conduct in stores and on public transportation, and the distribution of non-consensual deepfake content.
The court said the 25-year-old showed severe disrespect for South Korean law and society, pointing to his livestreamed antics that were intended to generate online attention and revenue. He was taken into custody immediately after sentencing due to concerns he could attempt to flee. Ismael had previously sparked major backlash after posting a video of himself engaging in inappropriate behavior at a statue honoring victims of wartime sexual slavery, an act he later apologized for, claiming he did not understand its significance. He had been barred from leaving the country during the legal proceedings and expressed regret for his actions ahead of the ruling.
