LAGOS GOVERNMENT MOBILISES MULTI-AGENCY RESPONSE TO GAS TRUCK ACCIDENT ON EKO BRIDGE

… Activates Public Safety Measures

The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), has activated a full-scale emergency response following a lone accident involving a 10-tonne gas truck on Eko Bridge, outward Apongbon, earlier today.

Upon arrival at the scene, LASEMA’s response team confirmed that a fully-loaded gas truck, registration number LSR 716 XD, carrying 10,090kg of cooking gas, fell on the bridge after its front tyre burst while in motion. The impact caused the truck to lose control, collide with the road median, and overturn. The accident resulted in continuous leakage of gas and damage to one solar-powered street light on the bridge.

In line with Governor Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu’s directive on rapid emergency intervention and public safety, a multi-agency operation is currently ongoing to manage the incident and prevent escalation.

Emergency responders at the scene include LASEMA, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).

Traffic diversion and perimeter cordoning have been instituted to secure lives and property. Fire services are blanketing the area to suppress the risk of explosion while technical teams work to stop the leakage and commence safe recovery of the fallen truck.

The Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, stated that the State Government’s priority is the safety of all road users and residents.

“The swift mobilisation of all relevant agencies reflects this administration’s zero tolerance for preventable disasters. We are working to ensure the truck is safely recovered and the bridge reopened with minimal risk. We appeal to Lagosians to avoid the area, cooperate with officials, and not light any form of naked flame near the scene,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu said.

He added that routine safety audits of haulage vehicles remain a key focus of the State under the THEMES Plus Agenda, and urged tanker operators to adhere strictly to roadworthiness standards and speed limits.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes while recovery operations continue. The Lagos State Government regrets any inconvenience caused and assures the public that all necessary measures are being deployed to restore normalcy in the shortest possible time.

For emergencies, the public should call the toll-free lines 767 or 112.
