Kano Begins Medical Screening for 3,000 Prospective Couples Ahead of Mass Wedding

The Kano State Hisbah Board has finalised arrangements for the medical screening of 3,000 prospective couples ahead of the state’s planned mass wedding programme.

The Deputy Commander General of the board, Sheikh Mujahedeen Aminudeen, disclosed this in a telephone interview on Sunday, stating that the exercise would commence on Monday across 24 local government areas of the state.

According to him, the screening will involve 1,500 male and 1,500 female participants who have registered for the programme.

“The screening will commence on Monday, June 8, 2026, by the grace of God. The couples comprising 1,500 females and 1,500 males will undergo the mandatory screening to ascertain their health status,” Aminudeen said.

He explained that the exercise would be conducted in collaboration with the Kano State Ministry of Health and the State Agency for the Control of AIDS.

The prospective couples are expected to undergo tests for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, genotype compatibility, drug use, gonorrhoea, and other sexually transmitted infections.

Aminudeen said the registered participants had been directed to report to Hisbah offices in their respective local government areas for the screening, warning that anyone who failed to appear would be removed from the programme.

“After that, only those who pass the health screening will qualify,” he added.

The screening will be carried out in Rogo, Wudil, Tudun Wada, Warawa, Kibiya, Dawakin Tofa, Garun Malam, Kura, Dambatta, Karaye, Tsanyawa, Minjibir, Rimin Gado, Shanono, Kabo, Tofa, Rano, Bebeji, Ajingi, Gwarzo, Sumaila, Kiru, Takai, and Madobi local government areas.

The Kano State Government, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, recently revived the mass wedding programme as part of efforts to curb prostitution and other social vices, particularly among young women and girls from families unable to afford marriage expenses.
