Yemeni adventurer known as 'The Spider-Man of Yemen' dies after falling into volcano crater during climb without safety gear

A Yemeni daredevil known as “The Spider-Man of Yemen” has died after falling into a volcanic crater while attempting a climb without safety equipment, authorities said.

Al-Qaqa Ibn Antar, 30, was scaling the steep rock walls of the Hardah Dam volcanic crater in Yemen’s southern Dhale province on Friday when he lost his grip and fell into the crater, which is about 120 meters (393 feet) deep.

A short video released by authorities shows Antar climbing the vertical rock face without protective gear. He is seen gripping the cliff with one hand while the other is raised before he suddenly slips and falls.

Emergency responders, including diving teams, were deployed to recover his body. Officials said divers located him at a depth of about 30 meters (100 feet) below the surface. The recovery operation lasted several hours and was described as difficult due to the steep terrain and hazardous conditions.

The Hardah Dam crater, also known as Haradhat Damt, is a volcanic formation near the city of Damt in southern Yemen. It features steep rocky walls surrounding a sulfurous lake, making access to the interior especially challenging.

Antar had gained a following on social media for posting videos of extreme climbs across rugged landscapes in Yemen. His stunts often went viral, including clips showing him hanging from cliff edges with no safety equipment.

Following the incident, authorities urged climbers and adventure enthusiasts to follow safety guidelines and use proper protective gear when engaging in high-risk activities.
