 EFCC Arrests One for Suspected Currency Racketeering in Enugu   Operatives of the Enugu Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,  have arrested one Ekene Ibegbu, in connection with alleged racketeering of N1,580,000 (One Million, Five Hundred and Eighty Thousand Naira).   He was arrested by members of the Special Task Force of the Commission attached to the Enugu  Command on Thursday, February 8, 2024 along Owerri-Enugu Road, following actionable intelligence about  his suspected involvement in currency racketeering.   He would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

 Commercial bus driver sets Edo traffic agency personnel ablaze A commercial bus driver has set an officer of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) ablaze, the agency’s management says on Friday. It was gathered that the driver of the bus marked Osun FFE145XA beat the traffic light at Adesuwa Junction, along Sapele Road and was stopped by traffic personnel. The driver, who is said to be at large at the time of filing this report, was said to have resisted arrest. When he was finally arrested, a personnel was said to have been directed to take the vehicle to the office of EDTSMA. Report had it that on the way to the EDTSMA office, the driver stopped the vehicle, stripped himself naked, took a keg of petrol from his vehicle, poured it on the EDSTMA official and set him ablaze. The spokesman of EDSTMA, Roland Owolabi, confirmed the incident to our Correspondent on phone.  Hardship: 1,500 Pensioners Die, Others Plan Protest No fewer than 1,500 members of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) have lost their lives to the current hardship and high cost of living that have enveloped the country in the last few months. This is as members of the union who are still alive vowed to protest naked in the streets of the Federal Capital Territory if they were not included in the recently constituted 37-man committee on minimum wage negotiation. The president of the NUP, Comrade Godwin Abumisi, who disclosed this to newsmen in Abuja, wondered why they would be excluded from a critical committee like minimum wage committee. The union also revealed that some of their members in some states collected as low as N450 monthly as pension, adding that they buried one of their members who died because of hunger last week.  Ondo Socialite, Adelabu Emirate, Kills Wife, Commits Suicide A socialite and petrol station owner in Akure, the Ondo State capital, Sesan Adelabu, popularly known as Emirate, has allegedly macheted his wife to death. After killing his wife, Adelabu also committed suicide by drinking an insecticide. It was further gathered that the incident happened on Friday night in the Alagbaka area of the ancient city of Akure. The deceased was the owner of the Emirate Filling Stations in Akure. His remains and that of his wife were said to have been deposited in a morgue.

 Kaduna, Borno, Adamawa, 4 other Northern states risk food crisis in 2024 – World Bank The World Bank’s latest Food Security report has projected that seven states across the North-west and North-east will undergo a crisis of food security levels in 2024. The report said insecurity and armed conflicts were reducing the standards of living across the region, adding that Borno, Adamawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Yobe, Sokoto, and Zamfara states are most at risk. Beyond Nigeria, the report noted that other countries in the West African region, such as Burkina Faso, Chad, and Niger will experience varying degrees of food insecurity. “It is projected that most areas in West and Central Africa will remain Minimally food insecure (IPC Phase 1) until May 2024, with some being categorized as Stressed IPC 2.
