Only lazy Nigerians depend on markets for food — Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi The Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, has come under criticism after saying Nigerians who rely on markets for food are “lazy”, as he urged citizens to embrace farming to tackle rising food prices. Nwaebonyi, who represents Ebonyi North Senatorial District, made the statement during an interview on The Mic On Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye which was published on August 1 with clips going viral on Friday, while defending the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Responding to concerns over food inflation and the rising cost of living, the senator said the government alone could not be held responsible for the prices of commodities in the market, arguing that citizens also had a role to play. “Do you expect Tinubu to moderate the prices of garri in the market? Culture is an important part of our identity, but no tradition should place obligations on a child who is too young to give meaningful consent. Our cultures must evolve with our understanding of children's rights and dignity. Protecting children should always take precedence over preserving practices that impose responsibilities they cannot freely choose. A child deserves the freedom to grow, learn, and choose their own path when they are old enough. That is how culture remains both meaningful and humane.'. More photos below.

Orbit’s family announced that he died at home on July 23, 2026, saying he would be deeply missed by loved ones and the many people whose lives he influenced through his music, friendship and kindness. A cause of death was not disclosed, and his family requested privacy. Orbit began his music career in the early 1980s as a member of the electronic trio Torch Song before transitioning into production. He became widely recognized for his innovative work with major artists and helped shape the sound of late-1990s and early-2000s pop music.  Trump supporter says he will not vote for him again after fiancée is detained by ICE at Houston airport A Texas businessman who supported Donald Trump in the last election says he no longer plans to vote for the president after his fiancée was detained by U.S. immigration authorities. John Gannon, 75, told CBS News that eight Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers detained his fiancée, Yasmin Suarez Reyes, 45, at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston on July 24. Gannon said the couple were preparing to fly to Las Vegas when plainclothes officers took Suarez Reyes away. She was born in Venezuela and is a Spanish citizen. Gannon, who owns businesses in the U.S. and Mexico, said he was surprised by the detention and described himself as a law-abiding taxpayer who had previously supported Trump. “I voted for Trump,” he told CBS News, but said the experience had changed his view of the administration.  Colorado couple welcomes baby daughter on highway after labor begins unexpectedly before hospital arrival Jennifer Maestas and her husband Ricardo were expecting to deliver their baby at a Colorado hospital, but their daughter arrived before they reached their destination. Jennifer was 35½ weeks pregnant on Feb. 18 when she noticed signs that labor had started. Ricardo, who had been away on a work trip, returned home and the couple immediately left for the Colorado Fetal Care Center at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora. Their baby was expected to need specialised care because doctors had identified Down syndrome and a heart defect before birth. While driving to the hospital, the couple realised they would not arrive in time. Their doula, who had been following behind them, joined them in the vehicle and helped deliver the baby.
