Rivers Administrator Charges New LGA Heads to Prioritize Prudence, Public Welfare

The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok Ete Ibas, has tasked the newly appointed administrators of the state’s 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) to exercise financial prudence and prioritize the well-being of citizens. Speaking at a meeting with the administrators at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday, Ibas emphasized the need for diligent efforts to promote trust, sustainable development, and peace through effective governance.

Ibas, a retired naval officer with over 40 years of unblemished service in Nigeria’s military and diplomatic corps, said he accepted the appointment out of a conviction to serve Rivers people and unlock the state’s potential. “Since resuming this assignment, I have visited a few local government areas. Those visits have shown me the need for support in administering the entire state, which I am responsible for following Mr. President’s proclamation,” he stated.

He revealed that the administrators, appointed on April 7, 2025, were carefully selected to assist in fulfilling his mandate. Ibas urged them to recognize the weight of their responsibilities, noting that local government is the tier closest to the people and the primary channel for delivering government services to communities.

The administrator directed the appointees to focus on key areas, including sanitation and environmental management, primary healthcare, welfare and discipline of local government workers, primary education, and youth engagement. He added that their performance in these areas would be evaluated in the coming weeks.

“I expect you all to recognize this moment in history and rise to the occasion as impartial leaders who will help me deliver on the mandate given to me by Mr. President to restore peace and stability and work toward returning all democratic institutions in the state,” Ibas said.

He called on the administrators to approach their roles with dedication, ensuring that the benefits of good governance are felt across Rivers State.
