 U.N chief Guterres calls for countries fueling Sudan's war to be held accountable United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Wednesday for countries providing weapons to the warring parties in Sudan that are used to attack civilians to be held accountable. "What is happening in Sudan is absolutely horrible. The humanitarian situation in Sudan is devastating. The level of suffering of the Sudanese people is intolerable," Guterres told reporters ahead of the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations in New York next week. Sudan's war, which erupted in April 2023 following a power struggle between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, has displaced more than 14 million people and created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. The incident happened on Monday in Etitiama Nkporo in Arochukwu Local Government Area of the state. The deceased was said to have had a misunderstanding at home with his wife, popularly called Mama Chichi, who operated a cafeteria. It was gathered that while the woman was getting set for business, Ilum arrived at the restaurant, pulled a gun and shot her in the mouth. It was gathered that angry youths, who went in search of the man, eventually found him hidden in a disused well. They fished him out, clubbed him to death and set his body on fire.       Lagos State Government on Monday wielded the big stick against the menace of commercial motorcycles (Okada) and tricycles (Keke NAPEP), proscribing their operations in six Local Government Areas (LGAs), nine Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and 10 major highways across the State with effect from February 1. The State Government directed security operatives to embark on a total enforcement of the State’s Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 to immediately address the chaos and disorderliness created by illegal operations of Okada and tricycle riders in restricted areas. Besides, the Government also banned Okada and tricycles from plying 40 bridges and flyovers across the State.       Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, visited Amu Plank Market in Mushin on Sunday to sympathise with victims of a midnight fire that razed several shops and destroyed goods worth billions. The inferno, which started in the midnight of Saturday, was said to be the first major fire incident in the popular timber market. No life was lost. Men of the Lagos State Fire Service and emergency response teams from Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) and Lagos State Safety Commission remained on the site to completely put the situation under control and salvage unaffected goods. They were joined by teams of firefighters from Federal Fire Service and Julius Berger. Sanwo-Olu, who described the incident as “unfortunate”, allayed the fears of the traders, saying the State Government was more interested in supporting the victims back on their feet, rather than ejecting them from the site.
