Alert on recall of Sibutramine containing products in Asia. #NafdacALERTS https://bit.ly/4dQ16s9 NAFDAC is notifying the public of the recall of some sibutramine-containing products by three regulatory bodies in Asia due to the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke in users. Sibutramine is an appetite suppressant previously authorized for the treatment of obesity but has been withdrawn from sale by the manufacturers and its licenses suspended by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in 2010 based on new safety information discovered from a reviewed study of the medicine. It was discovered from the review that the risk of sibutramine outweighs its benefits due to its link to cardiovascular events (such as heart attack and stroke). Weight control should be achieved through healthy lifestyle measures like eating healthy and appropriate exercise. ANSEC APPROVES THE RECRUITMENT OF 3,115 TEACHERS The Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) has approved the recruitment of 3,115 teachers. The breakdown of the recruitment are: 1,115 teachers for primary schools and 2,000 teachers for secondary schools. This second round of recruitment has been done mainly to address teachers shortages in rural and hard-to-get areas such as Anambra West, Ayamelum, Anambra East  Ihiala, Ekwusigo, Nnewi South, Ogbaru and Awka North.  The recruitment which was based on CTB exam like the first exercise is purely on merit. This is the second time Anambra State Government under Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo CFR is employing large numbers of school teachers at a go in less than two years.  Pennsylvania inmate on life support granted medical release 49 years after murder conviction An ailing prison inmate serving a life sentence in Pennsylvania for killing a man during a 1975 robbery won a medical release order from a judge Monday, although the decision came hours after he was put on life support. Ezra Bozeman, 68, won the release from an Allegheny County judge while on a ventilator in an intensive care unit battling sepsis because of complications from his quadriplegia, his lawyers said in a statement. Bozeman's petition for medical release from prison was supported by Gov. Josh Shapiro and the superintendent of the state prison at Laurel Highlands where he has been incarcerated. Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala had opposed Bozeman’s petition. Zappala's office said Monday evening that it had yet to see a court order and, as a result, could not say whether it would appeal it.  Lawsuit filed against cement company after deadly Houston crane collapse during storm An injured cement plant worker has filed a lawsuit against several companies he said allowed plant operations to continue during a severe storm last week after cranes collapsed, hurting him and killing one of his colleagues. The lawsuit, brought by Crosby Ware against Sesco Cement, Agri-Systems, Lampson International and McRay Crane & Rigging, accused the companies of gross negligence for failing to halt operations during the storm which had been forecast for the area. "Despite having actual knowledge of the weather forecasts and real-time weather conditions, and the dangers associated with continuing crane and other construction operations in them, Defendants nonetheless continued with business as usual," Ware's court filing says, specifying that the defendants allegedly required him "to come to the plant to deliver cement necessary for the ongoing construction project." ...

 China criticizes South Korea, Japan for lawmakers' visits to Taiwan China on Tuesday scolded South Korean and Japanese lawmakers for visiting Taiwan despite its strong opposition, chiding both neighbors for attending Taiwan's "so-called inauguration ceremony of the leader". Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te, regarded by China as a "separatist", was officially sworn in on Monday after winning a January election. China, claiming Taiwan as part of its territory, resolutely opposes the visits, its embassies in South Korea and Japan said, and has lodged solemn representations with the two northeast Asian countries.
