 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali. Zedi Feruzi, the head of the Union for Peace and Development (UPD) was walking home under police protection in Bujumbura's Ngagara district when he came under fire                     Eyewitness said Zedi Feruzi,Chairman of the Burundian Union for Peace and Development {UPD Zigamibanga} was shot by unidentified people when he was walking home in Bujumbura's Ngagara district,adding that one of his guards was also shot dead and another seriously injured.The killers ran away after the shooting.The assassination came days after apposition protests against the third term bid of Burundian president Pierre Nkurunziza in the June 26 2015 Presidential election.Zedi Feruzi was among the organizers of protests against Nkurunziza's third term bid that staged protests since April 26.The Organizers of protests include the opposition and civil society.May his rest in peace,Amen.
