Malian army withdraws from key Tessalit military camp: sources Mali’s army and its Russian mercenary allies have surrendered Camp Tessalit, a strategic military post in the north, multiple sources told the AFP news agency on Friday. An official from the Tuareg-led separatist group claimed soldiers and mercenaries at the camp had "surrendered", following a fierce fight over the weekend. Simultaneous attacks in Mali by militants linked to Al Qaeda and separatist Tuareg rebels on April 25 showed how fighters from different groups with different goals were able to strike at the heart of the West African country's military government. Gunfire and explosions were reported in the capital Bamako and around a large military base outside the capital, as well as Gao and central areas, as gunfire continuing in the northern city of Kidal. The wife of the Vice President of the United Dr Jill Biden,is visiting Malawi currently after Ethiopia's visit and will head to Niger next in a trip that has her forcusing on women's rights,immigration and education.Dr Jill is touring the three African countries to promote girl's education and women's empowerment.Dr Biden started off her three-country visit to Africa in Ethiopia this past weekend for the first time,she talked in Addis Ababa during a graduation of the Girls can code program which teaches high school girls the essential computer technology and IT skills to aid them in attaining higher education.According to the second lady fewer than 2 percent of university STEM graduates in Ethiopia are females.''You're women of action.There's nothing you cannot do if you have confidence in yourself''.More photos below.
