Rebels to withdraw from key DR Congo town 'after US request' The M23 rebel group has said it would withdraw from the eastern DR Congo town of Uvira at the request of the US administration, which had criticised seizure of the town last week as a threat to mediation efforts. The rebels entered Uvira, on the border with Burundi, less than a week after the presidents of Congo and Rwanda met with US President Donald Trump in Washington and affirmed their commitment to a peace deal known as the Washington Accords. The first-of-its-kind written examination is aimed at testing the applicants’ academic capabilities for admission into the respective classes of choice in State public schools.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Adesina Odeyemi who led a monitoring team to assess the conduct of the test which took place simultaneously in all the Six Education Districts of the State, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the exercise.
While assuring the candidates that results of the exercise would be ready next week, he said parents of the successful applicants will be notified through short message (SMS) to the phone number supplied by them.
Odeyemi said the early release of results will give parents and successful candidates ample time to prepare for school resumption on 11th September 2017.
According to the Permanent Secretary, the screening test was also aimed at creating a free level playing ground for the students, noting that the improved performance by students in public schools has attracted more candidates to seek admission into the State’s public primary and secondary schools.
Parents present at the examination centres at different locations in the State’ especially Districts 4 & 6, expressed gratitude to the Government for the transparency and equal opportunity availed every eligible student to participate in the screening exercise.A number of the candidates also hinged their willingness to transfer from private to public schools on the improved educational standards in government institutions as well as the inability of their parents to afford the high tuition fees in private schools anymore.
