 Ebola death toll surpasses 200 in DR Congo as virus spreads across eastern provinces The death toll from the Ebola virus surpassed the 200 mark Thursday as infections surged in the outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said in an update. Confirmed cases of the disease have climbed to 875, including 202 deaths, since the outbreak was declared on May 15, with a mortality rate of 23%, Africa CDC data showed. The virus is spreading across the eastern provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu, with Ituri accounting for nearly 95% of the cases. Donors and partners have pledged $910 million to support the Ebola response in the Congo and Uganda, according to Africa CDC, Anadolu Agency reported. The pledges were made during a recent meeting of African leaders and partners dedicated to the current disease outbreak. FG TO PARTNER WITH SENEGAL, OTHER WEST AFRICAN COUNTRIES ON THE POWER GENERATION

 

The Minister of State for Power, Mr. Goddy Jedy-Agba, OFR has said that the Federal Government is ready to partner with the Government of Senegal as well as other West African countries on power generation, in order to achieve positivity in the area of power, energy and rural electrification.

He stated this recently when the delegation from Senegal, led by the country’s Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Ms. Aissatou Sophie Gladima payed him a courtesy visit in Abuja Nigeria.

The Minister stated that as the world prepared for COP26, it was important for West African countries to discuss and come up with strong position that would represent the interests of the region and continent.

Agba, who identified funding as the major challenge affecting the Power sector in Africa, called on the United Nations and the World Bank to support the continent to develop its renewable energy sources. 

The Senegalese Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Aissatou Sophie Gladima,   said she was in Nigeria to seek how her country would collaborate with Nigeria in the area of electricity and power generation, noting that electricity deficit is a common problem in Africa.  However, there is need to work closely together to find sustainable solutions to the challenge.

The Permanent Secretary, Mr. William Alo, in his welcome speech said Nigeria and Senegal have many things in common, and working together would benefit both countries, immensely.
