 Lagos Court Jails NOGASA Chair, Fatuyi Phillips 21 Years  for N43.5m Fraud    Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Monday, November 18, 2024, convicted and sentenced Fatuyi Yemi Philips, Chairman, Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria, NOGASA, to 21 years imprisonment for N43.5m fraud.   The Lagos Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on April 5, 2022, arraigned Philips alongside his firm, Oceanview Oil and Gas Limited, on a two-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of N43, 502,000.00   Count one reads: "Fatuyi Yemi Philips and Oceanview Oil and Gas Nigeria Limited, on or about the 28th day of September, 2016 at Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud, obtained the aggregate sum of N43, 502,000.00 from Elochukwu Okoye and Elebana Unique Ventures Nigeria Limited on behalf of WAPCIL Nigeria Limited under the false rep

IMPROVED ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE: ANAMBRA STATE GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES ''PLEA BARGAIN'' MANUAL,FLAG OFF OPERATION OF ''PLEA BARGAIN'' IN THE STATE.{PHOTOS}.

As part of efforts towards improving the Justice system, Anambra state government through the Ministry of Justice in collaboration with Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption, ROLAC,  has launched "Plea Bargain" manual, and flagged-off operation of "Plea Bargain" as an alternative approach to criminal trail cases in the state.


The "Plea Bargain" is a new approach to criminal trail cases in Anambra state, where the defendant in a criminal trail who applies to the prosecutorial authority, showing his willingness to plea guilty to a particular offence is charged for a lesser or more lenient punishment being entered in his favour.


While the Anambra state Ministry of Justice Plea Bargain manual is a guide to the step by step procedure on the implementation of the Plea Bargain provision under section 167 ACJL, 2010.


The Plea Bargain manual lays down the framework for the operation of Plea Bargain by prescribing in its 16 items the details as to commencement, negotiations, and conclusion of the process, by drafting and executing the Plea Bargain agreement.


In a remark, the Anambra state Attorney General, and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Obianuju Nwogu Explained that the scheme is a step further in Governor Willie Obiano led administration's undoubting commitment towards enhanced, effective and efficient justice delivery to Ndi Anambra, in conformity with the global trends, and reflects the realities of the evolving trends in the 21st century.


Dr Nwogu who disclosed that Anambra is second to flagg-off the Plea Bargain in the whole Nigeria after Lagos state, called on major actors in administration of justice in the state to join hands to ensure the full realization of the purpose and objectives of the Plea Bargain in the state, as according to her, the scheme will in no small measure benefit defendants, complainants, and the entire society.


In a remark, the state Project Coordinator of Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption, Lady Josephine Onah who commended Anambra state government for all efforts it is always making towards advancing the justice system of the state, emphasized on the need for the commitment of the Plea Bargain committee, for the effectiveness of the scheme.


In a presentation, a Guest Speaker at the event, Dr Akeem Bello enlightened the participants on how to implement and sustain the scheme for the overall interest of the society.


During the event, the Anambra state Attorney General, and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Nwogu nominated a nine man committee that would ensure the implementation of the Plea Bargain scheme in the administration of justice in Anambra state.
