 Rebels to withdraw from key DR Congo town 'after US request' The M23 rebel group has said it would withdraw from the eastern DR Congo town of Uvira at the request of the US administration, which had criticised seizure of the town last week as a threat to mediation efforts. The rebels entered Uvira, on the border with Burundi, less than a week after the presidents of Congo and Rwanda met with US President Donald Trump in Washington and affirmed their commitment to a peace deal known as the Washington Accords. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that Rwanda's actions in eastern Congo violated the Washington Accords and vowed to "take action to ensure promises made to the President are kept." A report by a United Nations group of experts in July said Rwanda exercised command and control over the rebels. ASUU Strike: Chukwuemaka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, COOU, Disassociates Self From Ongoing ASUU Strikes


Academic staff of Chukwuemaka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, COOU, have resolved never to join any strike, whether local or national, as the Union has no issues with the university management and their salaries are paid as at when due.


The members of COOU Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASSU, reached the resolution during a meeting at the university premises.


The Chairman of the Union, Professor Osita Chiaghanam said academic staff union of the university has no reason to work against the school management, as the present administration of Professor Greg Nwakoby has transformed the university both infrastructural and human capacity development wise.


Professor Chiaghanam revealed that they decided not to join any of the ASUU strikes because the reasons for the strikes are always in favour of only the federal universities, and the strike also affects the academic calendar of the institution which benefits nothing from the ASUU agitations.


He assured academic staff of Chukwuemaka Odumegwu Ojukwu University of continuous improved welfare, and asked them to always support the school management for all round progress of the institution, even as he warned those engineering crisis in the university to desist forthwith. 


On his part, the Public Relations Officer of the COOU ASSU, who is also the Acting Dean Faculty of Physical Sciences of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Professor Kingsley Nwozor

revealed that before the administration of Professor Nwakoby, the university had just thirty professors but now has total of one hundred and twenty professors, with other numerous achievements.


Professor Nwozor emphasized on the need for the staff of the institution to be united and collectively work towards the continuous improvement of their welfare.
