... Gets Support of Councils’ Chairmen for Increased Consumers' Sensitisation

As a way of expanding the reach of education and advocacy on consumers' rights, the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), has established its presence in different Local Government and Local Council Development Areas across the State.

Speaking during the hand-over of the annex offices in Badagry, Ikoyi-Obalende and Bariga Local Council Areas, the Chairman of the Agency, Mrs. Funmi Falana, said the establishment of the annex offices were part of the determination of LASCOPA to reach every part of the State, disclosing that plans are in place to reach other local government and councils as well.

Falana explained that, with the establishment of the new offices, which is in addition to the already existing one in Ikorodu, the services of the agency will now be easily accessed and the complaints from the populace promptly attended to by LASCOPA officials.

The Chairman acknowledged the continuous support of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration to the agency, saying that Mr. Governor gave approval for the establishment of additional offices in the State.

She, therefore, urged consumers not to be complacent with unfair treatment by product manufacturers or service providers but instead should know that there is a place they can seek redress either by visiting any of the LASCOPA offices or lodge their complaints online.

In his remarks during the hand-over of the new office located within the Secretariat of Ikoyi-Obalende, the General Manager of LASCOPA, Mr. Afolabi Solebo Esq., pleaded with the Council Chairman to assist in sensitising the residents of the area to take advantage of the office now located closer to them.

At the Bariga and Badagry Annex offices, Solebo appreciated the dispositions of the leadership of the two councils to consumer protection initiatives, stressing that the provision of office spaces within a short time for LASCOPA officials shows that the Council Chairmen have the interest of residents of the area at heart.

While noting that the mandate of LASCOPA cuts across Health, Education and Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy in line with the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda of the present administration, Solebo maintained that good health is needed by every Lagosian to perform and operate optimally, hence the commitment of LASCOPA to rid the State of expired and contaminated consumables that could be injurious to the health of the citizenry.

Responding, the Chairman of Ikoyi-Obalende, Mr. Fuad Atanda-Lawal, pledged his full commitment and support to raise public awareness about the existence of LASCOPA within the council area and promised to construct a signboard that will further publicise the services offered by the Agency.

At Bariga the Chairman of the LCDA, who was represented during the handover of LASCOPA new office, by his Vice, Mrs. Adeola Kuponiyi, described the collaboration between the Council and LASCOPA as a public-centred initiative, revealing that a whole lot can be achieved together through a synergy that will ensure that substandard and harmful consumables are kicked out of the council area.

On her part, the Vice Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Mrs. Kappo Pedetin Elizabeth, who handed over the Agency’s new office on behalf of the Chairman, assured LASCOPA of a cordial working relationship, stressing that the local government will continue to work together with all relevant government agencies to achieve the agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration for all residents of the State.
