Female Lawyers Hails Police, Demands Justice For Young Lady Assaulted By FULafia Lecturer, Others

Female lawyers has condemned in strong terms the recent incident of assault on a young lady, Blessing Mathias in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The lawyers under the auspices of the International Federation Of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Nasarawa State chapter in a statement on Tuesday said it was appaled by the entire incident and the violence perpertrated against the young lady.
Chairperson of the association, Rabiatu Addra, in a statement added that they are in constant touch with the Victim and the Nasarawa State Police command.
Mrs Addra commended the Nigeria Police in swiftly investigating the case, leading to the arrest of four suspects connected with the crime.
“FIDA like all well meaning citizens eagerly await the conclusion of investigations and subsequent prosecution of those involved.
“While FIDA calls on the general public to always be watchful and report incidences of Gender-Based Violence, we are always prepared to promote, protect and preserve the rights of Women and children in Nasarawa State,” she added.
The police had arrested a Senior Lecturer with the department of History and International Studies of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Ass. Professor Fred Ekpa Ayokhai, in connection with the case.
Other suspects who have also been arrested include Emmanuela Ekpa Ayokhai, 23-year-old Bob Praise Ayokhai and 21-year-old Saint-Dan Ayokhai.
The Police also said the vehicle belonging to Dr Fred which was used in conveying the victim to a location along Kwandere road, Lafia where she was assaulted has been recovered.
According to reports, Emmanuela had a misunderstanding with the victim over a man named IG. The victim accused Emmanuela of snatching her supposed boyfriend and assaulted her. In retaliation, Emmanuela mobilised her family, went after the victim and got her assaulted as well.
Similarly, FULafia had on Monday in a statement also condemned the assault and dissociated itself from Dr. Ayokhai, a staff of the university.
The actions of Dr. Ayokhai, according to the university was unpardonable, shameful and condemnable.
“FULafia, with Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman as its Vice-Chancellor, is proud, and reputed for observance, of its core values, namely, integrity, innovation and discipline, through which its actions are conceived, tailored and anchored.
“The University will not, therefore, condone actions that seemingly, or otherwise, contradict its core values, irrespective of who the perpetrators of such actions should be. Consequently, the University, eagerly, awaits conclusion of investigations on this matter, which must be carried out to their logical conclusion, to take the next line of action.
“It is pertinent to state that the University has laid down rules, procedures and regulations on how to deal with its staff whose behaviours are found to have fouled the laws and rules that govern their conducts.
“Therefore, the University wishes to assure the people that the unfortunate action exhibited by Dr. Ayokhai does not represent, in the least, what should be expected from any member of staff of the University and his action is condemned in very strong terms by the University.
“Although measures are already in place to guarantee the good conduct of the staff of FULafia, such measures would be strengthened and reinforced to forestall any future occurrences of the type of dismissive and appalling behaviours exhibited by Dr. Ayokhai,” a statement issued by its Head, Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Abubakar Ibrahim, reads.
