LAGOS SPORTS COMMISSION CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SPORTS

The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), in partnership with Sports Global Ambassador Initiatives for Youth Development and Conflict Resolution, has celebrated the 2023 edition of the International Day of Sports for Development and Peace (IDSDP) with a three-day sports competition for students from 14 Junior and Senior Secondary Schools (both Private and Public) across the Six Education Districts in the State.

Executive Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Sola Aiyepeku, in his address at the commencement of the event held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, said this year's event was designed to encourage the youth to get more involved in sports activities because of the inherent benefits as well as bridging the gap between Public and Private Schools.

Emphasising the core benefits of sports as a leadership trainer and a means to harness potential while assisting those who want to take to sports as a career, the Chairman said participating students also competed in sports debates.

Executive Trustee of Ambassador Initiatives for Youth Development and Conflict Resolution, Ndidi Edeoghon remarked that this 2023 event had brought together students from different schools to discuss a united environment that will engender tolerance, conflict resolution and raise the standard for collaboration.

Part of the activities of the three-event was the Athletics competition held at Caleb British International School, Abijo Lekki, Lagos. The competition featured participants from Oreyo Junior and Senior Secondary Schools, Ijaiye; United Junior and Senior Secondary Schools, Pinefield Schools, Lekki: Whitesand Schools, Lekki and Corona Schools, Agbara, among others.

The organisers designated the IDSDP as a day to showcase the impact of sports as a vehicle to bridge the gap of inequality, gender sensitivity, promote a healthy environment and its immense contributions to livelihood

The event was successful in accentuating the collaborative effort between Public and Private Schools in the State while consolidating the cooperation among the Lagos State Sports Commission, the Ministry of Education, the Six Education Districts and a Sports Supporting Entity.
