Police smash fake employment syndicate in Rivers

15 May 2023

Operatives of Rivers State Police Command have arrested one Kelvin Akaa, a suspected member of a fake employment syndicate in the state. Officers from Choba Police Division arrested Akaa, in Port Harcourt, on Saturday, following complaints by his victims.

The suspect, The Guardian learnt, allegedly impersonated a staff member of University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) to defraud unsuspecting members of the public with the promise of employment in the facility.

One of the victims, Nsongurua Dan, in an interview narrated his ordeal in the hands of the suspect, leading to his arrest. He said: “What actually happened was that I met him while I was doing my business, and in the process, he told me there was a vacancy at UPTH. He asked me to bring a certain amount of money that the management required that we (the applicant) pay before they could give me an appointment letter.

“ Consequently, I paid N410,000. After the payment, I did not hear from him again for a long time, only for me to meet him at the Abuja Campus of the institution over the weekend. So, I called the attention of the Sheriff at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), and from UNIPORT the Sheriff notified police officers at Choba, who apprehended him.

“We entered the same vehicle in the Abuja campus. In the police station, the officers informed me that other people are also looking for him.”

When contacted, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe Koko, confirmed the arrest of Kelvin Akaa. She said the suspect is giving useful information to the police while investigation is ongoing.
