Ministry To Establish Mobile Court For Gender-Based Violence

Ministry of Women Affairs will introduce mobile courts to expedite the delivery of justice in addressing gender-based issues.

The Minister in charge, Uju Kenedy Ohanenye, told newsmen in Abuja that the courts would be set up in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, civil society organisations, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, and other relevant stakeholders.

“The Mobile Courts will work closely with the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Minister of Justice, the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and security agencies to develop innovative strategies for enforcing the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, combating sexual and gender-based violence, and addressing female genital mutilation,” she said.

Mrs Ohanenye also hinted that town cryers would be engaged in remote areas to raise awareness, and whistle-blower incentives would be introduced to encourage the reporting of such issues.

The Minister promised to launch “new empowerment initiatives” during her first 100 days in office, which she maintained would positively impact the lives of vulnerable women.

The aim, she added, is To “encourage women’s groups to establish cooperatives registered with the Ministry” and thereby enable the government to empower them with various production machines, ultimately boosting the country’s economy and improving the livelihoods of women who, consequently, would be contributing to nation building.
